The first zone covers the northern province of Limpopo through to Gauteng and the State capital of Pretoria. This area is mostly game ranch country and the bushveld offers a rich diversity of animals, trees and birdlife. Kruger National Park is easily accessed from these northern towns. Temperatures in summer, particularly in Mussina (Messina), can reach the 40's so bring sunblock, sunglasses and hats. Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has the cooler Soutpansberg mountains with crisp, fresh air and grand views and vistas. Polokwane (Pietersburg) with its busy domestic airport is the business centre of the north. It is located halfway between Pretoria and the Zimbabwe border. The towns of Mokopane (Potgietersrus), Mwokgophong (Naboomspruit), Modimela (Nylstroom) and specifically Bela Bela (Warmbaths) are largely weekend getaway areas and offer quiet bush tranquility, hydros, spas and mineral baths. The R101 that runs parallel to the N1 particularly between Polokwane and Bela Bela is a worthwhile and scenic deviation that will add only a few extra kilometers to the journey. Antiques, art and craft shops and tea rooms can be found here and offer handmade goods and homemade produce.
