Zone 3 covers Kroonstad to Hanover and this section of the N1 is characterised by open spaces and an ever-changing vegetation.
Don't bypass Kroonstad, a quaint town with all amenities and it is a convenient overnight stop located halfway between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein. A little further on is Ventersburg, a farming and ranching area.
Bloemfontein, just over 200km further south, is a friendly city with many historical buildings, museums, hospitals and an airport. Plus it offers lots of pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, coffee shops, theatres, shopping centres and art & craft markets (experience the Bloemfontein art route). As host to international events it offers a wide range of sporting facilities, including excellent golf courses.
Continuing in a southerly direction is the small town of Trompsburg, ideally placed near the highway for weary overnight travellers.
Colesberg is a really charming little place. It is almost halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town and comprises of a main street with a variety of good restaurants, pubs and overnight accommodation. There are many historical buildings and a grand church at the top of the town.
This central part of the country can be very cold on winter nights.
